Superintendent Wade had Leah and Buxton standing in her office. Leah’s clothes were still stained with Nathan Fisher’s blood.

“Are you feeling all right, Leah?” Nora asked gently, watching as her trusted DI paced the room. “Do you need medical attention?”

“What I need to know,” Leah replied, rounding on the two, “is how the hell did a sniper end up end up firing on Jonesy and me—and a witness?! Nobody else knew that we were going to see Fisher.”

“Maybe therein lies the problem,” Buxton replied, clearing his throat and having a lot to get off his chest.

“What do you mean?” she asked challengingly, not having the time or the patience for his bullshit.

“You’ve always been a law unto yourself, DI West,” he explained, turning to face her. “You seem convinced that the best way to deal with the rulebook is to ignore it completely. MIT has been looking into the sniper shootings. Technically, you were stepping on my toes…”

“Buxton, that’s enough!” Nora snapped, reserving some of her fire in defence of her colleague. “I have been working with DI West for over a year now, and I can assure you that although we don’t always see eye to eye on how operations are run, I can always trust her to bring in a result.”

Buxton stepped back, chastised, and Leah could have kissed the superintendent for her unexpected show of support. It certainly makes a change of pace from her usual breathing down my neck.

“However,” Nora continued, and Leah knew she’d been too optimistic. “It is still a valid question. Why did you go off to speak with Nathan Fisher alone without contacting us?”

Buxton looked at her with a smug expression.

Leah sighed, feeling like she needed to lay all the cards on the table. “You know the blog article that Fisher was going to release online?” she began, knowing that Wade wouldn’t forget the piece in a hurry. "We think that a detective in this station has been leaking information about the case."

"That's quite an accusation," Nora noted, seemingly determined to fill out her role as devil's advocate. "Assuming there is a leak, what makes you so sure it's a detective? For all we know, it could be a local PC that spilt the news."

"Believe me, that would make things easier," Leah explained, thinking back to the damning post. "But Fisher's article talks about things that only the top brass knew, like the type of gun that was used. Someone was supplying the blogger with the information. We had hoped that we could talk with Fisher about it and maybe find out who his source is."

"Except, he's lying in a hospital bed," Buxton exclaimed pointedly, crossing his arms. "Do you not think if you'd told us ahead of time that you were bringing him in, we could have taken the necessary precautions?"

"Don't you fucking dare lay that at my door!" she fired back, no longer caring about how she sounded. "Only two people knew that we were taking Fisher to the station—me and DC Jones.
